More Jacksonville Shipyard Layoffs Coming

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) _ BAE Systems says as many as 300 employees its shipyards in Jacksonville could be laid off.

Multiple media outlets report the company made the announcement Tuesday, saying the layoffs will happen on or about March 18.

BAE employs about 700 workers at its two Jacksonville facilities.

The company said in September that it would lay off about 200 people by the end of the year. Spokesman Karl Johnson says that number was reduced and about 100 jobs were eliminated.

The company attributed the layoffs to reduced demand for commercial shipbuilding and repair ,along with changes to the Navy’s maintenance plan and fewer ships stationed in the area.

BAE is also eliminating approximately 530 of the 1,075 jobs at its Norfolk, Virginia shipyard after cutting over 350 jobs late last year.
