MIAMI (AP) — Miami-Dade County Commissioners oppose an Arizona-style immigration bill in Florida and wants Tallahassee to pressure Congress to pass comprehensive reform instead.
On Tuesday, the commission approved a resolution opposing any law resembling Arizona’s SB1070. Florida officials debated a number of immigration bills last session but never passed a final version. Gov. Rick Scott has said he hopes to try again this term.
Commissioners noted more than half of the county is foreign born and roughly two-thirds are Hispanic and could be affected by a law that requires immigrants to carry identification papers, or which gives police wide leeway to ask about a person’s immigration status. The resolution also notes Arizona’s law has cost the state more than $700 million and has been partially blocked by a federal judge.
