Man With Knife Killed By Manatee Sheriff’s Deputy

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) _ Authorities say a Manatee County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man who approached him wielding a knife.

Sheriff Brad Steube says deputies were called to 50-year-old Marc Stoddart’s Bradenton home Sunday afternoon after Stoddart’s wife called 911 to report that he had been drinking and was armed with a knife and threatening to harm her and himself.

In a statement to The Bradenton Herald, Steube said deputies found Stoddart outside the home, holding a knife and having cut his wrists.

Steube said Stoddart refused deputies’ orders to drop the knife, and one deputy fatally shot him after Stoddart approached in “a threatening manner.”

The deputy who fired the fatal shots will be placed on routine administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

No other injuries were reported.
