Man Shot 2 On I-85 Because He Wanted Car

ANDERSON, S.C. — Authorities say a 22-year-old man shot two people who stopped to give him a ride on Interstate 85 in Anderson County on Christmas Eve because he wanted their car to drive to Georgia.

Sheriff John Skipper said at a news conference that John Villarreal was arrested Tuesday while still driving the car where he shot the two people six days ago.

Authorities say 43-year-old Mary Fowler died Dec. 24 in the hospital and 44-year-old James Dobson II is still in critical condition.

Skipper says a Georgia state trooper stopped Villarreal and wrote him a speeding ticket shortly after the shooting. The sheriff says Villarreal thought about killing the trooper but worried about cameras in the patrol car.

Villarreal is charged with murder. It isn’t known if he has an attorney.
