Authorities in central Florida say a man apparently kidnapped his ex-girlfriend and fatally shot himself after leading police on a chase on Interstate 95.
Police say 28-year-old Brett Lee Curtis told them in a 911 call early Tuesday morning that people were going to get hurt if they didn’t stop following him.
The Ledger of Lakeland reports Curtis fired shots at pursuing officers before shooting himself. His 26-year-old ex-girlfriend Elizabeth Rae Hamilton was in the car, but wasn’t injured.
Police say Curtis kidnapped her from the Lakeland mall where she works.
The newspaper reports Curtis called 911 several times to warn officers to stay back. Hamilton apparently made one of the calls, telling the dispatcher Curtis had threated to kill her. She cried during the call, telling the operator that Curtis had multiple weapons.
