Lawsuits Fly Over New FL Abortion Law

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Two groups are suing the state to try to block a new Florida law that requires a 24-hour waiting period for abortions.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida and the Center for Reproductive Rights filed the suit Thursday, a day after Gov. Rick Scott signed the bill creating the waiting period.

The lawsuit names a Gainesville abortion clinic and Medical Students for Choice as plaintiffs.

It says that the law violates women’s right to privacy in the state constitution by creating additional burdens before having an abortion.

The law will go into effect July 1.

Republicans who passed the bill said they hoped some women would reflect on their decision during the waiting period and decide not to end their pregnancies.
