Kentucky Sees 20-Inch Snow Fall

FRANKFORT, Ky. — There’s more than 20 inches of fresh snow on the ground in parts of Kentucky, while northwestern Tennessee has seen eight to 14 inches of sleet and snow.

It’s part of what forecasters say may be the last big blast of winter weather this season, sending temperatures plunging in much of the South.

Kentucky’s governor has declared a state of emergency for the second time in less than a month. National Guard soldiers are firing up Humvees to make emergency medical runs and to rescue stranded motorists.

To the north, there’s snow in Maryland, New Jersey and other parts of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. In the nation’s capital, non-emergency federal workers were told to stay home. Hundreds of flights have been canceled at the three major airports in the Washington-Baltimore area.

In Texas, thousands of students are home from school today after a late-winter storm dumped up to seven inches of snow. Flightaware.com reports more than 600 flights canceled today at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
