Jobs in Tampa declined over past decade

The number of jobs around downtown areas has declined in 91 of the nation’s largest metro areas since 2000, including Tampa Bay.

Additionally, 97 of the 100 largest metro areas experienced a loss of employment within 35 miles of their central business districts during the recession, according to a new report by the Metropolitan Policy Program at the Brookings Institute.

The Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area had the largest drop of 91,692 jobs. The largest amount of current jobs, 45 percent, is located between three and 10 miles from a central business district, the report said.
