JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Students at a Florida high school named after an honorary Ku Klux Klan leader say they are happy that their school will soon be renamed.
Students at Nathan B. Forrest High School in Jacksonville say it’s high time for the Confederate general’s name at the majority black school to be removed. That will happen next year after a new name is selected.
Tenth grader De’jia Boatwright said she is glad the controversy is over.
School Superintendent Nikolai Vitti said students voted overwhelmingly in a survey to rename the school because of Forrest’s history as a slave trader and historical reports of his order to kill 300 captured black Union soldiers.
The Duval County School Board voted 7-0 on Monday to change the name.
