Battery Sun Pass Transponders Stop Working

MIAMI (AP) — Sun Pass customers still using the old battery-powered transponders will no longer be able to use Florida’s pre-paid toll system after the new year begins.

SunPass has been transitioning to the slim portable transponder and mini sticker for years, and the battery-powered transponders will finally stop working after Thursday.

The Tampa Tribune reports that 1.7 million SunPass customers have upgraded to the new, slimmer devices, but the Florida Department of Transportation says as many as 100,000 customers are still using the old devices.

Those customers have until the end of Thursday to visit www.sunpasstagswap.com or call 1-855-TAG-SWAP to get a free replacement transponder. After that, drivers will either have to pay cash or be tolled by their plates. That program charges an administrative fee of $2.50 a month.
