Dog Given Up For Dead, Tampa Park Re-Opens

(UPDATE  1 p.m.)    Tampa’s Rowlett Park has been re-opened and the search for the alligator that apparently attacked and killed a woman’s dog has been ended.

Earlier:

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) _ Police say an alligator attacked a black Labrador retriever named Haze after it chased a bird into the Hillsborough River near Tampa.

Someone called 911 Sunday evening, saying a woman was in the river yelling about an alligator. Arriving officers found 32-year-old Natasha Lee on a small island near a dam in the river. They waded into the water and guided her back to shore using a rope.

Lee told officers she saw the gator drag the dog underwater. They searched but didn’t find the dog or the gator.

A trapper was called to search for the alligator.

Haze is three years old and weighs about 75 pounds.
