Study: Schools Aren’t Doing Enough When it Comes to Sexual Assault

A report from the office of Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) says too many universities aren’t complying with federal law when it comes to handling sexual assaults on campuses. Among the report’s findings:

  • 41 percent of schools did not conduct a single investigation of campus sexual assault in the past five years
  • 30 percent of campus law enforcement officers received no training on how to respond to cases of sexual violence
  • 22 percent of institutions allow athletic departments to oversee incidents involve athletes.

The last figure is particularly interesting given that this week, two University of Miami football players were arrested for sexually assaulting a female student who was deemed incapacitated. Both players were immediately dismissed from the team and suspended from school. The university is now conducting an investigation.
