The dog who was hit by a van during a wild police chase in South Los Angeles Wednesday night may need to have his legs amputated.
Gordo wandered out into the street around 9:00 p.m. PDT as a white box van was barreling down the street being chased by police. The van had lost a wheel and was shooting sparks that trailed behind it. Gordo, a poodle mix, was hit and hobbled back to his home, bloody and injured, according to his owner. He was rushed to a local veterinary hospital where a surgeon was expected to evaluate his injuries on Thursday. The whole thing was caught on video being aired live on local news channels by a news helicopter.
He was originally listed in critical condition but is expected to survive, according to doctors at the hospital. The only bad news is that he may lose his leg, according to KLTA. Gordo suffered a deep cut in his muscle as well as a broken hip and femur.
On social media, people have been voicing their support for the poor dog. Several hashtags have started trending in the Los Angeles area.
As of Thursday morning, more than $3,500 had been sent in to the hospital via PayPal for Gordo, Shea Heagle, a client care coordinator at City of Angels Animal Hospital in Culver City, said.
