Google Mappers Walking Beaches In Pinellas

Florida_Beach_2013A small team of camera-wielding trekkers is in the middle of a massive undertaking to map the entire length of Florida’s beaches. This week, they’re in Pinellas County.

A partnership between Google and Visit Florida, the state’s tourism agency, the project involves collecting tens of thousands of images to get a panoramic view of all 825 miles of beachfront in the state. The hikers walk several miles of beach each day with high-tech 40-pound rigs on their backs. The camera snaps photos every 2.5 seconds.

Tampa resident David DeLong, 55, is one of the trekkers. He said it’s not a bad gig, but it’s not as easy as it looks.
