Pregnant Woman Dies Sitting at Hotel Pool When Car Plows into Her

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ Officials say a pregnant woman who died when a car plowed into a hotel pool cabana won an essay contest to attend a South Florida marriage seminar.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel (http://sunsent.nl/GBi4bw ) reports Alanna and Michael DeMella of Medford, Mass., decided to extend their vacation after the conference.

They checked into Fort Lauderdale’s Riverside Hotel Sunday, hours before a driver lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a poolside cabana.

Alanna DeMella and her unborn son were killed. DeMella, a special education teaching assistant, was seven months pregnant.

The couple attended the Real Marriage Tour on Friday and Saturday at Calvary Chapel.

Fort Lauderdale police say an investigation continues.

The car’s driver was hospitalized. Michael DeMella was treated for minor injuries.
