FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ The Broward Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a scheme that’s targeting the elderly.
Sheriff’s spokeswoman Dani Moschella says someone is posing as an investigator with the agency’s fraud unit.
According to the South Florida SunSentinel (http://sunsent.nl/IGDxm9 ) the scheme works like this.
The phony investigator threatens the resident _ usually an elderly person _ with arrest unless they pay a fine for an outstanding warrant.
Moschella says this is the first time they are aware of someone involved with the con posing as a Broward Sheriff’s officer.
One victim told deputies a man with a thick Jamaican accent identified himself as Capt. Tom O’Brien but was calling from an out-of-state phone number.
Moschella says people should never send money to anyone claiming to be a member of law enforcement.
