Grand Jury Calls For Broad Bans Of Synthetic Drugs

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A Broward County grand jury convened to investigate the distribution and use of flakka is calling for broad bans of synthetic drugs.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports that after hearing from 21 witnesses over several months, the grand jury issued a 68-page report Monday recommending the state prohibit entire classes of designer drugs instead of individual bans of specific chemical compounds.

The grand jury found that flakka was a factor in 61 county deaths in the last 15 months.

According to the report, the number of times flakka has been detected in a crime lab has risen from just once in Florida in 2011 to over 1,800 case in Broward County alone last year.

State Attorney Mike Satz says the report offers “solid suggestions to address this grave situation.”
