Waterspout Spotted Near Causeway

A waterspout formed in Tampa Bay just north of the Courtney Campbell Causeway on Monday evening, the National Weather Service in Ruskin said.

It caused damage in Oldsmar, knocking down a tree, branches, a mailbox and snapping a guide wire between two homes on Shore Drive, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said. It damaged shingles to a home at 422 Shore Dr. The resident of the home at 422 Shore Dr. left the home as she saw the waterspout heading her way, the sheriff’s office said.

A transformer in the area also blew out and the power company was responding, the sheriff’s office said.

No injuries were reported, the sheriff’s office said.

The waterspout was reported at 6:43 p.m., said Michael Lewis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Ruskin. Numerous people took pictures of the waterspout, with many posting the pictures on Twitter, Facebook and other social media.
The background flow from the east came together with the sea breeze from the west to help create the waterspout, Lewis said.
