St. Petersburg Police Shoot Charging Dog

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) _ A police officer shot and killed a dog while responding to a disturbance call in a St. Petersburg neighborhood.

Police say Officer Jeremy Hayes fired three times at the dog Thursday afternoon when it charged at him.

The dog, named Phero, died on the sidewalk.

The Tampa Bay Times (http://bit.ly/A4weC9 ) reports police described the dog as a pit bull terrier.

The newspaper reports police were called after an argument broke out between two people who lived near Vachon at the apartment complex.

It was not known how the dog got out.

Police spokesman Mike Puetz says the officer will remain on duty during an investigation.

Last year, St. Petersburg officers were involved in at least seven fatal dog shootings, prompting police to change polices dealing with animals.
