St. Pete Council Moves Forward to Demolish Old Pier

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) _ The St. Petersburg City Council has agreed to move forward with a plan to demolish the old pier and build a new one.

The $50 million project was set in motion with Thursday’s vote.

The Tampa Bay Times (http://bit.ly/KWMrK5 ) reports the current pier will be demolished next summer and a new one will be built.

The plan calls for opening the new pier in late 2015.

The newspaper reports the city has entered into a $4.7 million architectural and engineering services agreement with Michael Maltzan Architectures to design the new pier.

The project is known as the Lens.
