South FL. Cop Resigns After Investigation

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) — A South Florida police officer resigned following an internal affairs investigation revealed he didn’t complete a traffic report about a possible DUI involving his fiancée.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel (http://sunsent.nl/AsagRe ) reports 29-year-old Derek Albers was not on duty when he responded to a September crash involving 25-year-old Serena Russo.

According to the police investigation, Russo appeared intoxicated and was driving a truck registered to Albers. Investigators found that Albers struck a deal with the other driver to settle damages among themselves.

The newspaper reports Albers also failed to conduct a road sobriety test on Russo.

Albers resigned Dec. 6 after eight years on the force. He received six commendations about his work and was Officer of the Month in March 2009.

A phone number for Albers was not available.
