CLEARWATER – A department store at a Clearwater mall temporarily caught on fire after a man crashed his car into the side of the building, according to the City of Clearwater.
The incident happened at the Dilliard’s at the Countryside Mall Clearwater around 2 a.m. Wednesday.
The driver, a 55-year-old male, somehow crashed his car into the store leaving a 10 X 15 foot hole in the side of the store.
The store caught on fire as a result, but the sprinkler system along with fire crews put out the blaze.
An interview with the driver indicates that this may have been a suicide attempt. He was taken to the hospital with burns and non life-threatening injuries. The crash remains under investigation.
