Package In Ybor Sends 15 People To Hospital

YBOR CITY — Fifteen people were taken to Tampa General Hospital after someone noticed a leaking package at the Ybor City post office, officials said.

According to Tampa Fire Rescue, crews responded to the post office on 12th Avenue shortly after 10 a.m. after an employee called 911 to report a package that was leaking. The leaking package was taken outside of the building by one of the employees.

Police officers and firefighters then evacuated the building and secured the scene.

Officials said the first person who came into direct contact with the package complained of some mild irritation on his hands. The number of employees who had complaints related to the package then climbed to at least 15.

The affected employees are being taken to the hospital for evaluation.  Officials said some of them are experiencing minor symptoms, like skin irritation, while others are being transported as a precaution.

Tampa Fire Rescue’s Hazmat Team is now working to determine what chemical was inside the package.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
