Homeless Man Murders After Fatal Food Fight

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a 53-year-old homeless man was decapitated by another homeless man during what they believe started as a fight over food.

Sarasota Sheriff’s Office officials say the fight began Tuesday morning in a wooded area near Sarasota.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune cites a sheriff’s report that indicates Stephen C. Webber was cooking food with 48-year-old Ricky L. Leer and another man in an area where many homeless people camp.

Witnesses told detectives that Leer became enraged when Webber knocked over the grill. According to witnesses, Leer jumped Webber and chopped at his head with a machete.

Leer has been charged with second-degree murder. Jail records do not list an attorney for Leer.
