DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Thinking about committing a crime in Deerfield Beach? Make sure the landscaper isn’t looking.
About 70 city-employed landscapers and garbage truck drivers received training this week from the Broward Sheriff’s Office. They’re participating in a program called Operation B.O.L.O., which trains people to be on the lookout for crime as they go about their daily tasks. If their tip leads to an arrest, the employee gets a reward of up to $100.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel (http://sunsent.nl/Ksqgv1 ) reports another group of 35 employees will be trained next week.
Deerfield Beach Police Chief Pete Sudler says this is the first such program in Broward County. It’s funded by a sheriff’s office trust fund.
The sheriff’s office recently trained Waste Management trash haulers to spot crimes on their routes.
