Autospy Shows Mom’s 3-Week-Old Dies After Shaken or Thrown

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) _ A central Florida woman was arrested after an autopsy showed that her 3-week-old son died after being shaken or thrown forcefully onto a bed.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office tells The Tampa Tribune (http://bit.ly/N9E6pb ) that the Winter Haven woman was arrested Thursday after telling deputies she took strong prescription medication the night of May 12, when her son died.

Deputies say the woman’s drug abuse “created a hazardous environment” for the newborn and may have played a part in his death.

An autopsy determined that the boy died from internal hemorrhaging consistent with either being shaken of violently thrown onto a soft surface, such as a bed.

The woman was charged with negligent homicide.
