KEY WEST, Fla. — A Florida man is dead following a diving accident in the Dry Tortugas.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says 50-year-old Robert Carney died Tuesday while on a dive and spearfishing trip with friends.
Officials say Carney was on his first dive of the day in about 72 feet of water. His dive buddy said they were spearfishing and had been on the bottom for about 10 minutes when he noticed Carney’s regulator was out of his mouth. Carney was limp and not moving. The man told authorities he tried to pull Carney to the surface, but he was too heavy. He surfaced to get help.
Others on board the boat retrieved Carney and rushed him to the Coast Guard Station in Key West, where he was pronounced dead.
