JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A Jacksonville inmate under suicide watch has died after jumping headfirst over a balcony.
Authorities said 30-year-old Travis Lamal Fryer was returning from a court appearance Thursday and had just been unshackled when he ran from a corrections officer and up a flight of stairs. He jumped headfirst almost 13-feet and struck his head.
The Florida Times-Union reported Fryer was considered a suicide risk and was being housed in a special part of the jail. He was arrested in September and charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
Authorities are investigating.
