Florida CFO returns $300K to state agency

Florida’s Agency for Persons with Disabilities received $310,000, after a settlement with a Hillsborough County organization accused of making false claims.

The settlement followed an investigation of the Hillsborough Association for Retarded Citizens, doing business as Hillsborough Achievement and Resource Center.

The settlement gave APD $254,758 in civil damages, and awarded DFS $55,243 for investigative expenses. Jeff Atwater, Florida’s chief financial officer, said he would give the DFS funds to APD to be used to benefit Floridians whom the agency serves.
