ACTIVISTS : ORCA HOME WON’T GO TO SHAREHOLDERS
Animal rights activists say SeaWorld is thwarting their efforts to put to shareholders a resolution to create a coastal sanctuary for retired orcas. PETA said on Monday that SeaWorld is invoking a Securities and Exchange Commission rule to prevent its shareholders from learning about the proposal. Under PETA’s proposal, SeaWorld would develop coastal sanctuaries where the company’s orcas could retire.
HEARING OVER DOCKS IN ST. PETERSBURG WILL BE HELD
Rick Ware is not simply fighting City Hall, he is contending with a bigger Goliath: the state of Florida. And he may have the city of St. Petersburg as his ally. The state Department of Environmental Protection sued Ware last summer over his dock. The state contends it owns all the submerged lands in navigable waterways, including Coffee Pot Bayou. Ware contends the land beneath his dock is his private property.
SOUTHERN COMMAND INTEL OFFICIAL FACES BRIBERY
An intelligence specialist for the Miami-based Southern Command is facing federal bribery, extortion and other charges involving alleged drug money. Federal prosecutors said Monday that 37-year-old Jose Emmanuel Torres was arrested after accepting a duffel bag from a confidential informant he was told contained $250,000 in drug-related money.
JEB BUSH BACKS REPUBLICAN IN NEW AD IN FLORIDA RACE
Jeb Bush is playing a starring role in a high-stakes Florida congressional election. The popular former governor appears in a new TV ad to help Republican David Jolly in the race to fill the seat of the late Congressman Bill Young. The spot is funded by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and begins airing Tuesday in Florida’s 13th Congressional District, which includes the St. Petersburg area.
CRIST SAYS “GUYS LIKE RICK SCOTT” CAUSED RECESSION
Democrat Charlie Crist’s campaign isn’t wasting time responding to a Republican Party Web ad that blamed him for the state’s financial woes. Crist’s gubernatorial campaign released its own Web ad on Monday, throwing blame over the recession back at Republican Gov. Rick Scott. The ad features Crist speaking directly to the camera, saying it’s ridiculous for Scott to blame him for Florida’s economic downturn.
