MIAMI-DADE LEADERS LAUNCH RESPONSIBLE GUN VENDOR INITIATIVE
Leaders of 14 municipalities in Miami-Dade County are taking part in the launch of a new firearms vendor initiative aimed at using market forces to promote responsibility in the gun industry. The Arms With Ethics organization says aim is to get gun vendors who sell weapons to cities to adopt a series of best practices such as training workers to recognize illicit gun purchases and doing regular inventory checks.
STATE SCHOOL BOARD CONSIDERS GRADING SYSTEM CHANGES
The State Board of Education is meeting in Orlando to consider Commissioner Pam Stewart’s proposed plan to simplify Florida’s school grading system. The plan removes items that automatically cause a school grad to drop. It also eliminates SAT scores and certain graduation rates from the complex formula used to evaluate high schools.
LOTTERY SETS ALL-TIME WEEKLY SCRATCH-OFF SALES RECORD
The Florida Lottery reports that more people bought tickets for its scratch-off games last week than ever before in history. Lottery officials said Monday that $78.5 million in scratch-off game tickets were sold the week beginning Feb. 10. That’s $4.5 million more than the previous record, which was set in March 2012.
MYSTERY SKELETON DISCOVERED IN FLORIDA KEYS
Investigators say a man has discovered a human skeleton in a wooded area of the Florida Keys that likely has been there for months. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says the male skeleton was discovered Monday morning on Stock Island, just east of Key West. Authorities are working to identify the remains.
FLORIDA ARTIST SMASHES $1M VASE AT MIAMI MUSEUM
A South Florida artist is facing a criminal charge after smashing a $1 million vase at Miami’s new art museum in what police say appears to be a form of protest. Police say 51-year-old Maximo Caminero was charged with criminal mischief after Sunday’s incident at the Perez Art Museum Miami. Caminero told officers he broke the vase by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei to protest the museum’s lack of local artist displays.
