‘LITTLE TONY’ FACES SENTENCING FOR BOULIS SLAYING
A Florida judge is preparing to sentence Anthony “Little Tony” Ferrari for the 2001 mob-style slaying of a prominent businessman who ran a fleet of gambling ships and founded the Miami Subs restaurant chain. A jury this week recommended life without parole for the 56-year-old Ferrari in the shooting death of Konstaninos “Gus” Boulis, former chief of the SunCruz Casinos.
TRIAL DELAYED TILL MARCH FOR CUBAN HIJACKER
Trial has been delayed until March for the American who hijacked an airliner to Cuba decades ago and returned voluntarily to face the U.S. charges. A federal judge agreed Wednesday to the delay requested by the attorney for 56-year-old William Potts. The trial had been scheduled to begin this month on an air piracy charge, which carries a sentence of between 20 years and life.
POLK COUNTY COMMISSION GIVES AMAZON TAX BREAK
Internet giant Amazon won a second tax break from the Polk County Commission for building a packaging and sorting operation near Davenport. The commission voted Tuesday to give Amazon a 75-percent property tax abatement for 10 years. That will total an estimated $840,710.
RETAILERS HELP FLORIDA, SOLDIERS GET HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
Retailers have pitched in to make sure some Florida National Guardsmen have the transportation to get home for the holidays. The Florida Retail Federation on Wednesday announced that 10 retailers helped raise $35,000 needed to get the soldiers back to Florida.
$12,000 REWARD OFFERED IN SUSPICIOUS PANTHER DEATH
State and federal wildlife authorities are offering a $12,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the suspicious death of an endangered Florida panther. The panther was found dead Dec. 7 in the Big Cypress National Preserve with a suspected gunshot wound. Anonymous tips can be reported to the state wildlife commission at 888-404-3922.
