FLORIDA SUPREME COURT ASKED TO DEFINE SEXUAL INTERCOURSE
The Supreme Court will consider the definition of sexual intercourse in a case involving a gay man charged with not letting a partner know he was HIV-positive. Arguments in the case will be held Wednesday. Gary Debaun is trying to have a charge dismissed under a 1986 law designed to prevent the spread of the human immunodeficiency virus.
POLICE: NO FOUL PLAY SUSPECTED IN ROLLINS STUDENT DEATH
Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the death of Rollins College lacrosse player, who died at an area hospital after being discovered in an off-campus residence by his roommate. Winter Park Police say officials responded to an emergency call Monday afternoon and found 22-year-old Will Hauver experiencing an unknown medical condition. He was transported to the hospital where he later died.
NEW FLORIDA SCHOOL SEARCHES FOR NEW MASCOT
A state university that opened its doors in September and doesn’t have sports teams is looking for a new mascot. Volunteers at Florida Polytechnic will meet Wednesday to discuss the school mascot. The volunteers will take a course in design, and their concepts will be whittled down to three finalists, with students voting March 10. The winning mascot will be revealed April 22.
WORLD FOOD CHAMPIONSHIPS HEADING TO FLORIDA
Get you forks and knives out. The World Food Competition is leaving Las Vegas and heading to Florida. Officials announced Tuesday that the cooking competition will be held in November in Kissimmee, south of Orlando. The event had been in Las Vegas for the past three years. The competition offers $300,000 in prizes, with $100,000 awarded to the grand prize winner.
POLICE: GIRL, 4, DIED FROM DISCIPLINARY BEATINGS
Police say a 4-year-old Jacksonville girl died after her father and stepmother used a piece of lumber to discipline her. According to police, Jada Norfleet was hit multiple times before paramedics were called to her home on Friday. Chief of Investigations Chris Butler told The Florida Times-Union that the child had been hit on the arms and legs in an “ongoing abusive situation for months.” He said she died from blunt-force trauma.
