CRIST SEEKS WIN AS DEMOCRAT AFTER LIFETIME IN GOP
Former Gov. Charlie Crist is on the verge of making history by becoming the first person in Florida to be a gubernatorial nominee as a Republican and a Democrat. Crist is the favorite to win Tuesday’s Democratic primary for the chance to face Republican Gov. Rick Scott in November. Former Senate Democratic Leader Nan Rich is hoping for an upset.
BURGER KING BUYING TIM HORTONS FOR ABOUT $11 BILLION
Miami-based Burger King says it struck a deal to buy Tim Hortons Inc. for about $11 billion, a move that creates the world’s third-largest fast-food company and could accelerate the international expansion of the Canadian coffee and doughnut chain. The corporate headquarters of the new company will be in Canada. The two brands will continue to be run as stand-alone chains, with Burger King still operating out of Miami.
POLICE DOG KILLED BY LIGHTNING STRIKE
A lightning strike from a passing thunderstorm in Florida killed a Panama City Beach police dog named Argo. The daughter of the dog’s handler, Cpl. Jason Gleason, found the dog behind his kennel Sunday evening. Gleason left the dog in his kennel because he was on his way to a training session. Officials say most of the fur was missing from Argo’s front leg above the paw, indicating a lightning strike.
JUDGE FACES CHARGES AFTER EXHIBITING ‘INSTABILITY’
A state judicial commission has filed formal charges against a Seminole County judge after finding probable cause that she has demonstrated instability and a bizarre pattern behavior during her tenure. The Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission filed the charges Monday against Judge Linda Schoonover. At least two-thirds of the group’s investigative panel found probable cause earlier this month to initiate formal proceeding.
2 PANTHER KITTENS FOUND DEAD IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA
Wildlife officials say two Florida panther kittens were killed by a vehicle over the weekend in southwest Florida. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that the first kitten was found Sunday morning along Immokalee Road in Collier County, while the second was discovered across the street that night. Biologists estimate the kittens to be about four months old. The dead cats mark the 15th and 16th road kills this year
