Coast Guardsman Honored For Kingston Rescue

MIAMI (AP) — A Florida Coast Guard petty officer is being honored for his actions in rescuing singer Sean Kingston following a personal watercraft accident last year.

The Coast Guard on Tuesday will bestow its Silver Lifesaving Medal on Petty Officer Third Class John Rivera.

Rivera was off duty on his personal boat last May 29 when he saw Kingston’s watercraft hit a bridge near Miami and saw Kingston go underwater. Rivera jumped in and kept Kingston afloat until other rescuers arrived.

The Silver Lifesaving Medal goes to someone who rescues another person from drowning or a shipwreck.

Kingston was hospitalized for about a month after the crash. He’s best known for his 2007 hit “Beautiful Girls.”
