Festival Wildlife Refuge Cancelled

Fort_Myers_2013FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — A family festival day at a southwest Florida national wildlife refuge has been cancelled because of the government shut down.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service made the announcement Friday.

The News-Press reports that Family Fun Day was scheduled for Oct. 20 at the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge.

The event was cancelled because the service can’t logistically support it because of the shutdown, according to a government release.

National wildlife refuges, facilities and operations across the nation remained shuttered as a result of lapse in funding for the fiscal year that began Oct. 1. The lack of funding affects roughly 200 field stations in the Southeast Region including all refuges, national fish hatcheries, fish and wildlife coordination offices, and ecological services and migratory bird field offices.
