Volusia deputy shoots wrong woman during robbery

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A Volusia County deputy shot a woman after she called 911 to report someone breaking into her home Thursday night.

The woman was rushed to the Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach. She is expected to survive, said authorities.
Deputies and state law enforcement agents are trying to determine what happened.

The woman called 911 just after 6 p.m. and said someone was breaking into her home on Eloise Circle in the Fairwinds Estate subdivision.

Officials said the deputy fired after the woman came out of the house with a weapon, striking her in the shoulder.

The deputy involved in Thursday’s shooting was 28-year-old Omar Bello, who has been with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office since November 2011.

Bello will be placed on administrative leave with pay following the deputy-involved shooting.

The woman who was shot is believed to be the same woman who had called 911, Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said. No intruder was found. Her name has not been released.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be investigating the shooting.
