ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ The Volusia County Council has decided to ban driving on the beach in front of Andy Romano Beachfront Park.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal (http://bit.ly/VSkycw ) reports the council on Thursday approved a request from Ormond Beach officials to make about 600 feet of beach in front of the new $8 million park a no-driving zone.
Councilwoman Pat Northey said it’s important to protect children by removing cars from the stretch of beach.
The park becomes the sixth traffic-free zone along the 50 mile stretch of Volusia County’s coastline.
Driving is allowed on about 17 miles of beach. A stretch of 14 miles is controlled by the state or federal government.
The newspaper reports the county will install temporary barriers and work with Ormond Beach officials on permanent barriers and signs.
