DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ Wildlife officials say nearly 1,200 permits were sold during the first two days of sales for the state’s first bear hunting season in 20 years.
The permits went on sale this week and can be purchased through the Oct. 23 deadline. The seven-day season begins Oct. 24.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will not limiting the number of permits available for the hunt. The hunt will take part in four regions of the state. The agency has guaranteed at least a two-day season. At the end of the second day, hunters must check in with the state to see if the season will continue or whether it will be shut down.
Wildlife officials estimate the state’s bear population at about 3,000.
