Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is due address a sold-out gathering of the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches and the Palm Beach County Bar Association on Monday. Organizers say more than 1,200 people are expected to hear the justice. She’ll also be signing copies of her book.
FORMER FLORIDA PRISONS CHIEF BLASTS GOV. RICK SCOTT FOR NEGLECTING PRISONS AND PRISON WORKERS
The former head of Florida’s prisons is blasting Gov. Rick Scott and his administration, saying they put politics ahead of guard and prisoner safety. Mike Crews, who resigned in November as Department of Corrections head, told the Miami Herald that Scott’s aides were worried last year that deaths and other problems at the prisons would hurt the governor’s re-election chances and wanted him to blame employees who weren’t at fault. He says he refused.
KENYAN TERROR SUSPECT WANTS EVIDENCE TOSSED IN US CASE
A Kenyan man charged in the U.S. with attempting to support foreign terrorist organizations wants a judge to throw out key computer-related evidence against him. The attorney for 27-year-old Mohamed Said says authorities cannot prove that Said was actually using certain computers during online chats with an undercover FBI employee. Said’s lawyer says without witnesses or other proof, prosecutors cannot conclusively show it was Said who participated in the chats.
CHEF CREATES MENU FOR CANCER PATIENTS AT FLORIDA HOSPITAL
Famed chef Michelle Bernstein is teaming up with a South Florida hospital to create a special menu for patient undergoing chemotherapy. As part of the one-year agreement, Bernstein will develop two signature recipes and a complete menu, and will personally train and provide assistance to the hospital’s kitchen staff. The menu items will be available to patients receiving chemotherapy treatment at Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Hospital West and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.
FAMILY SEEKS INFORMATION FIVE YEARS AFTER PORT ORANGE WOMAN DISAPPEARED
Friends and family marked the fifth anniversary of the disappearance of a 28-year-old central Florida woman with a candlelight vigil. A group of about 20 gathered in Port Orange Sunday to celebrate the life of Laurel Lea Rogers and to ask anyone with information to come forward. The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports Rogers hasn’t been seen since Feb. 1, 2010, when she left her family’s home and got into a friend’s car.
