Commissioner Meeting Will Discuss Hernando Animal Services

Zeus the dog will be the main topic of discussion at the Hernando County commission meeting this morning.

That’s because Zeus, an eight month old pit bull mix, was taken to Hernando County Animal Services April 13th and euthanized less than an hour later.

As a result, county commissioners have been flooded with irate phone calls and emails from animal lovers about the killing of Zeus.

But this isn’t the first controversial incident involving Hernando animal services. 2 1/2 years ago after taking in dozens of abandoned Shih Tzu dogs, half of them ended up dying or being euthanized because they contracted Parvo Virus.

Several other animals recently euthanized had adopters waiting for them.

In fact, during the first 6 months of the county’s 2011-2012 fiscal year, 55% of all animals brought to the shelter were killed.

The county’s current policies and procedures are now being questioned.
