Barge Crashes into Fort Walton Beach Bridge

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ Authorities say a barge carrying a crane crashed into the Brook Bridge in Fort Walton Beach.

The Wednesday afternoon crash damaged parts of the span and ruptured the main water line to Okaloosa Island.

The Northwest Florida Daily News (http://bit.ly/Y11c6z ) reports the bridge was closed to motorists and pedestrians for hours, causing a traffic snarl.

Officials say the crash happened at 3:15 p.m. as the tugboat Miss Lizzy was pushing four barges.

The crane hit the bridge, taking down several feet of concrete guardrail and breaking the water pipe.

No one was injured.

Crews worked throughout the night to make repairs to the bridge and the water line.

On Wednesday evening, officials asked Okaloosa Island residents to conserve water if possible.
