Baby Giraffe Grows Steadily at Central Florida Zoo

MELBOURNE, Fla. (AP) _ A baby giraffe is growing steadily at a central Florida zoo.

Brevard Zoo officials say the male Masai giraffe weighed 159 pounds when it was born Feb. 6.

Now the calf weighs 170 pounds.

Veterinarian Trevor Zachariah tells Florida Today (http://on.flatoday.com/WGq2I8 ) that some mild weakness in one of the calf’s legs during its first couple days has been resolved.

The baby doesn’t have a name yet. Officials say the calf and its mother, Johari, will remain out of public view until the baby is ready to mingle with the rest of the zoo’s giraffe herd.

Adult male Masai giraffes can top 19 feet, and their hearts can weigh up to 25 pounds.

Masai giraffes can live about 25 years in the wild and longer in captivity.
