MIAMI (AP) — Six people face federal charges following last week’s vessel capsize off Miami that resulted in the deaths of four women.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office reports that a grand jury returned a 24-count indictment Thursday.
The boat carrying Bahamians, Jamaicans and Haitians capsized seven miles east of Miami. The 11 survivors were found clinging to the hull early in the morning Oct. 17.
The indictment charges 53-year-old Naaman Davis and 38-year-old George Lewis, both of the Bahamas, with encouraging and inducing aliens to enter the United States resulting in death. Davis is additionally charged with involuntary manslaughter. Lewis is also charged with illegal reentry into the United States by an aggravated felon. They both face possible death sentences.
Three Jamaicans on the boat were also charged with illegal reentry into the United States by an aggravated felon. A fourth Jamaican passenger was charged with illegal reentry into the United States.
