10 Dead, More Than 250 Missing In Sri Lanka Mudslide

Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — At least 10 people are reported dead after a mudslide buried scores of workers’ houses at a tea plantation in Sri Lanka today. And an official says more than 250 others are missing.

The mudslide was triggered by monsoon rains.

The country’s military has mobilized troops to help with the rescue operation.

Video shows huge mounds of earth covering the houses, and muddy water still gushing from the hilltops.

Most of Sri Lanka — the Indian Ocean island nation that was once called Ceylon — has seen heavy rain over the past few weeks. And there have been warnings of mudslides.
