TS Ophelia moves west while new depression forms

MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Ophelia is moving west over the Atlantic, while a new tropical depression has formed in the Pacific south of Mexico.

Ophelia has maximum sustained winds early Wednesday near 45 mph (75 kph) with some gradual strengthening possible during the next day or so.

Ophelia is centered about 1,370 miles (2,205 kilometers) east of the Leeward Islands and is moving west near 13 mph (20 kph).

Meanwhile, the new tropical depression in the Pacific has maximum sustained winds near 35 mph (55 kph). Additional strengthening is expected and the U.S. National Hurricane Center says the depression is forecast to become a tropical storm later in the day.

It’s centered about 170 miles (275 kilometers) south-southeast of Puerto Escondido, Mexico, and is moving west-northwest near 5 mph (7 kph).
