Rare American Crocodile Found In St. Pete

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Residents of a St. Petersburg gated community have a new and unusual neighbor: an American crocodile.

Shondra Farner in the Caya Costa neighborhood spotted the croc over the weekend. She snapped a photo and called state wildlife authorities. The reptile appears to be about 9 feet long.

While crocodiles are found in the Caribbean and South Florida, it is extremely unusual to see them in central or north Florida. There are only about 1,500 of the shy and reclusive reptiles in the state.

Trappers are trying to trap the croc and will relocate it. The reptile cannot be killed because it is an endangered species.
