Gov. Scott Won’t Release Inmate with Leukemia

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Gov. Rick Scott has rejected a father’s plea to release his daughter from prison so she can get better treatment for leukemia.

Scott denied clemency Wednesday for Deborah Turner after officials assured him she was getting proper treatment in prison.

Her father, Jesse Turner of St. Augustine, said she’ll die if not freed soon. She’s currently due for release in three years on a series of burglary and theft convictions.

Scott also denied clemency in most of the other 99 cases he heard Wednesday.

The governor, with approval of the Florida Cabinet, did grant one pardon, and he restored civil or gun rights to several ex-felons.

The pardon went to former bookkeeper Raymond Kevin Cross. He pleaded guilty to embezzling $300,000 from his employer, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.
