Deceased marine honored in Tampa

Honored MarineTAMPA, Fla. (AP) — While a Marine received the Medal of Honor for rescuing comrades ambushed by Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan, the family and friends of one of those troops gathered in Florida for a memorial service.

Dakota Meyer of Kentucky received the nation’s highest military award Thursday in Washington for saving the lives of 36 American and Afghan troops. Meyer requested memorial services also be held in the hometowns of four Americans who died during the September 2009 ambush.

One of those victims was Marine Staff Sgt. Aaron Michael Kenefick, the son of Susan Price of Riverview. Price held a small ceremony in Tampa.

Meyer repeatedly defied orders to help his trapped comrades before finding the bodies of Kenefick and three other Americans.

Price called Meyer “a son of what America stands for.”
