‘Mockingjay’ Tops Box Office This Weekend

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 comes out on top of the box office this weekend with $123 million, ahead of Big Hero 6 and Interstellar.

Mockingjay far surpassed the other films this weekend, claiming the top spot by over $100 million but coming short of the $158 million debut of last year’s Hunger Games: Catching Fire and the $153 million opening of the first Hunger Games in 2012.

Lionsgate followed suit behind The Hobbit and Harry Potter when they chose to split the last book of the series into two parts, in an attempt to increase profits on the franchise. By dividing the last book, they pushed most of the big drama into the second film, which is scheduled to for release in November 2015.
